Text: "You can be assured that your grandfather was a dedicated Scamp sailor who
took his duties seriously. He was knowledgeable of his boat and was highly
respected by officers and crew. He had a great sense of humor and many jokes
were directed toward him to get his infectious laughter. After we were hit on
that Good Friday of 1944, and with our courageous and dedicated crew, we were
able to get to Manus Isle and affect initial repairs along side Tangiers. It was
your grandfather who donned gear to dive under our boat to determine what
damage we had suffered. There were few in submarines who had the smarts
Wick had about his engines and his boat."

Letter from shipmate George Kuhn to Jeff Thrift, grandson of M. F. Wickham

  Text: USS Scamp SS-277
Damage Report: 09/18/1943 ‎(4th)‎
North of New Guinea 0 degrees - 41'N. 146 degrees - 28'E.
Depth Charges - 15

Depth charged by Japanese destroyer escort while at 320 foot depth. Forward torpedo room took in 7000 lbs. water through ruptured pitometer log gland before gate valve could be secured. Small electrical fire started in trim pump motor controller, which was dislodged from its foundation, and small fire also started in pump room control panel. Bow plane rigging motor shifted on its foundation, preventing power rigging of planes. Engine air induction piping commenced to leak slowly and after engine room induction hull flapper valve was distorted so that it would not properly seat. JK-QC sound gear jammed. Bridge TBT flooded. Many grounds developed in electrical circuits. Stern plane noise level greatly increased. Numerous gauges and meters were deranged or broken and much other minor damage occurred. Ship remained on patrol.

Text: "Maynard was my mom's brother and my dad's best friend. They went to Denver in 1933 to join the Navy together. Maynard was a diver on a submarine. He died near the end of World War II when his sub was sunk near Japan. It was never found."

"My mom was crazy about him; he was her big brother and after her father and mother were separated, Maynard became 'the man of the family.' "

"Albuquerque was a very small place then, and everyone knew everyone else. apparently my dad was rather wild, so when he'd come over to my mom's house to see Maynard, their mom would say "here comes that Don Calkins". he came over a lot because he loved my grandma's cooking :) she was a great cook, i remember. when my dad and mom got engaged, the whole town was sort of aghast.. my mom was so quiet and naive and "that Don Calkins" was so wild. but he was the best father, he settled down when he got married. :) "
